Gulf Harbour Radio
This is a very friendly amateur radio net that provides a means of communication between maritime mobiles and land based stations. There are net controllers on both sides of the Tasman and all stations relay reports when conditions are poor.
The net was started about 40 years ago by Tony, ZLIATE (now a silent key) and in those early days boats could be heard from the other side of the world. With the sunspot cycle being at its low, that is no longer possible but we seem to manage.

JOHN - ZLIAQSwho has a wonderfully quiet farm qth in South Auckland, so has a good signal and can hear well. He is sometimes a mm somewhere in the Hauraki Gulf on their catamaran.
DAVE - ZL3DMhas recently moved from Waihi beach to a new qth at Bethlehem, near Tauranga, NZ. He is missing his yagi but has plans to improve his TX. Meanwhile he manages to listen via a relay antenna near Blenheim.
PATRICIA - ZL2RKwho also runs marine coast station Gulf Harbour Radio, ZMH286 from a qth just north of Auckland, NZ.
DAVE - ZL2VYhusband of ZL2RK, who gets called on when weather forecasting is needed.
GARY - VK4IBCGary has a great QTH on a hill at Hervey Bay Queensland. He has been a keen ham for over 30 years and as a previous boat owner retains his interest in the maritime world.
ASHLEY & BRENDA - VK4FUUUsually a mm on their boat in and around Townsville but also can be portable in their motor home. 2019 added a home QTH so plenty of options.
BOWDEN - ZL1HXBowden has taken to the sea again. He has been a commercial fisherman so knows the marine life well and is now back on his boat in a private capacity - but still fishing!
Ralph - VK2TRKRalph is now on a rural property near Newcastle, New South wales, Australia. He first joined the net while a maritime mobile, and they hope to be again one day, but next time in a catamaran. Meanwhile his wife is enjoying having a retired race horse to look after, and Ralph is back on the air.
Dieter - VK3FFBDieter runs a wonderful station from his Melbourne QTH. He used to run a winlink station in both India and Australia so is familiar with mariner comms even though he is not a mariner.
Tony- ZL1BHUTony has been involved in many aspects of the marine industry both in his working and recreational life. He has travelled the world during his merchant seaman days then explored coastal NZ and the SW Pacific sailing with wife Susan and their family. Now he volunteers on a replica traditional sailing vessel on Auckland harbour. And cuts firewood to keep fit!
